Grado x Horween 

This exclusive set of headphones by Grado Labs in Brooklyn utilizing dense Tali, sometimes African Bolondo, wood that has been salvaged from tanning drums. The very high density that makes the wood excellent for tanning drums also makes it an excellent choice for audio delivery. In the development of these headphones we also tested the design using Purpleheart Wood. While the Purpleheart was beautiful in both appearance and sound, the Tali Wood cups delivered superior range, accuracy and overall listening platform.

At Horween Leather Company nearly all of our tanning drums are wood and assembled in-house using staves and metal hoops. These drums last for decades and are repaired countless times before they require replacement. While no longer watertight as an assembled mill, there are still large sections of wood that capable. Wood pieces are carefully chosen and then shaped into the signature Grado shape. The headphones are held together by a Genuine Shell Cordovan headband. This headphone set is one that will last several lifetimes. 

In a standard closed back headphone the sound can bounce around the enclosure and back into the drive unit creating additional (unwanted) output. Additionally, air trapped against the driver can restrict movement. The open back construction of these headphones allows for the best possible resolution, transparency and clarity. This design, when combined with the Grado-built drivers, delivers an amazingly true and enjoyable listening experience. While not necessary, we do recommend pairing these headphones with a DAC and amplifier to take maximum advantage of the power and potential of the components. We recommend the Element III MK2 from JDS Labs as a starting point for an all-in-one unit.
